Alfresco Styling for a Mothering Sunday Lunch

Mothering Sunday is traditionally the day for many of to show appreciation to our Mums and also to celebrate being a Mum. It’s a precious day where different generations can gather together and enjoy spending time with each other. Hopefully it’s a well deserved day of relaxation for Mum with others taking the reins to plan the special day.

Spring can bring warm sunshine and an opportunity to eat outside among the budding trees and birdsong. Start the alfresco season in style and make your Mother’s Day table look delightful with our tablescaping tips – that extra added attention to detail makes all the difference.

  • Choose a colour theme, perhaps from favourite flowers, inspiration from the garden surrounds or simply bright colours to add appeal to the table.
  • Take time to set the table – adding layers of detail makes the table interesting and fun too. You may not usually use placemats for your outdoor furniture but they will add that extra finesse to a special table setting.
  • It’s worth the effort to find those seldom used pretty pieces of crockery. They don’t all have to match and this is the occasion to use them!
  • Coloured jugs and water glasses can also be added to the mix.
  • Use linen napkins and tie with garden twine or pretty ribbon - tuck in a sprig of rosemary or small flowers.
  • Go to town with flowers on the table – jugs, carafes, jam jars can all make attractive vases for the occasion and give a good variation in height. Also consider herbs or other foliage from the garden to add different shapes and textures.
  • Potted plants or bulbs can be placed on the table instead of flowers and make a lovely take home gift for guests too.
  • If space allows, add candlesticks and lanterns which create interest on the table and atmosphere later in the day.
  • Beyond the table itself, add other colour pops and decoration with pretty bunting and outdoor scatter cushions.

Spending time together and chatting around the table long after the meal has finished will be a wonderful way for Mum to spend the day – with no clearing up for her afterwards!
